(Prepared by the Office of Emergency Management & Safe Schools)

What is ALICE?

ALICE = Alert • Lockdown • Inform • Counter • Evacuate
A nationally recognized program that prepares students and staff with options to respond safely during a violent critical incident.

 Why Does North Penn Use ALICE?

  • Keeps students & staff safe as the top priority.

  • Endorsed by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and school safety experts.

  • Gives staff & students flexibility instead of one-size-fits-all lockdowns.

  • Encourages confidence, not fear, during emergencies.

 How Does ALICE Work?

  • Alert: Recognize danger & communicate quickly.

  • Lockdown: Secure the classroom if evacuation isn’t safe.

  • Inform: Share real-time updates with staff & responders.

  • Counter: As a last resort, distract/disorient a threat to create time to escape.
