SHIELD

August 14, 2025

Dear North Penn Elementary Families,

As we begin a new school year, we’re excited to introduce a new learning opportunity in our elementary schools: SHIELD—short for Solving Hypotheses through Innovation, Environmental Literacy, and Design.

SHIELD is a hands-on program focused on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). It will be added as the fifth special area subject alongside art, music, physical education, and library science. The program will begin this year (2025–2026) at Knapp, Kulp, Hatfield, Gwyn Nor, and Gwynedd Square elementary schools, and will expand to all other elementary schools next year (2026–2027).

SHIELD offers students in grades 1–6 the chance to explore and learn through projects, experiments, engineering challenges, and environmental lessons. It’s aligned with Pennsylvania’s science standards (STEELS) and encourages students to think critically, solve problems, and work together. It also connects students to real-world experiences through guest speakers, community partnerships, and career exploration.

Kindergarten students won’t have a separate SHIELD class, but key parts of the program—like hands-on activities and environmental learning—will be included in their regular classroom experiences.

We’re proud to offer SHIELD as part of our commitment to student growth, community engagement, and excellence in education. We look forward to sharing more about the program and the exciting opportunities it will bring this year.

To learn more, please tune in to the Education, Curriculum and Instruction Committee meeting on Tuesday, August 19th at 5:30 PM. You can register to attend through this link or watch the recording afterward at youtube.com/nptv.

Thank you for your continued support as we bring innovative and inclusive learning to all North Penn students.

Sincerely,
